06/11/13 Economy of Power (notes)

  • Friedrich Nietzsche – Will to Power
  • Genealogy – Rediscovery of struggles
  • History – totalising discourses
  • History needs to be looked at more carefully
  • Why are they the legitimate voice, why do we believe those in power or ‘experts’
  • Genealogy focuses on the illegitimate knowledge
  • Is a totalising discourse good or bad
  • If we are inside the totalising discourse then we don’ know any better
  • Knowledge is produced for its own sake
  • knowledge is produced for a subject in search of emancipation
  • Media talks nothing about bad English history
  • What we think we know, we don’t know
  • Knowledge ceases to be liberation and becomes a mode of surveillance
  • We are told not to argue against the dominant totalising discourse
